Are You a gram weenie?

The SMMPodcast show #95 is now available for your listening pleasure… well for those of you that still enjoy the sound of my Scouter voice.
In this show I talk about shaving weight and reducing volume in your backpack.  Take a listen to the show and let me know what you think.
As I recorded the show it became very obvious to me that this content would be better communicated in a video.   So I am going to record a video around mid November and get it posted here.
In the video I want to show you some of the tips and tricks that I use to reduce weight and volume in my pack.  It may not be the item itself.. but how it is configured and set up that reduces the weight and volume.
Again, let me know what you think about the show and now would be a great time to get questions in to answered in the video.

Thanks for all your support and listenership!

Where do we go now?

Its been a month since I posted my last podcast.  I won’t go into too much detail here, but lets just say that “the tribe had spoken” and it looked like I was being voted off the island so to speak.
The good news is that my Scouting life is going great and some great local Scouting friends got me back on the right track.
So Show 94 is out and in the show we talk about my Troop getting the annual plan finished and things are looking up for Scouting around our area.
Take a listen to the show and let me know what you think.  There are many ways to send us feedback.  Leave a comment here, drop us an email, shoot us a voice mail and use PTCMedia.net to leave feedback.
I spent some of today making muffins on the backpacking stove, a video is coming soon on that.  A real quick, easy, and yummy idea for the trail.
If you have never baked with your backpacking stove.. the time is now.

Talking with my SPL

Troop 664 after the Polar Bear Swim

Last week at Summer camp, my SPL and I had the chance to sit in a row-boat together for 1 hour and 12 minutes.  During that time we talked about the week, leadership, attitudes, and his future.  It was one of the best hours I have ever spent in my life.  During that hour I met a new young man.. up until then, he was just another Scout that stepped up to meet the leadership challenge.  He has always been active and one of those guys that you can always count on.. some would call his type the core of the Troop.
I appreciated the fact that he was very open with the discussion and his sense of humor really came out.
I recorded our conversation and invite you to listen in.  SMMPodcast #93 is all us and a few guys swimming their mile swim.
I hope you enjoy the time spent with James, my SPL, as much as I did.

Calling all Podcast listeners

I am sending out a plea to all the listeners of the SMMPodcast!!!  Show 100 is just 8 Shows away!  I need your help to make it a great show… yeah I know.. how much better can it get?  Right?
What I am looking for is what you want to see in Show 100.  I would love to have some guests, maybe?  Any topic in particular?  Help me out on this folks.
And then we will start the next 100!  If I were tweeting this maybe we could throw a cool hash tag on it like #100showsin.
So help me out, send your ideas to me via email, smoke signal, telegraph or yeah you can even tweet it to me @smjerry.

It’s funny, I was talking with Cubmaster Chris from the AHAW show.  We were talking about when I came into PTCMedia in 2008.  My first show hit on March 11, 2008, but Chris was not sure.  He wanted me to have 10 shows under my belt before I became a part of PTCMedia.  So show #10 hit the internet on May 15th of 2008 and the rest they say is history.
I have a lot of fun with the podcast and hope that you all still enjoy listening.

I thank you all for the downloads.  It means a lot to see that people do listen.

The Promise of Scouting and the Journey to Excellence

I am often asked about the “Promise of Scouting”.  In the title of the Blog and Podcast I declare that I have just trying to help deliver the promise of Scouting.  To help you understand what I am talking about when I say this let me show you where I got it.  The 11th Edition of the Boy Scout Handbook from 1998.  On page 1 is tells the Scout:

Welcome to the Boy Scouts of America,
SCOUTING promises you the great outdoors. As a Scout, you can learn how to camp and hike without leaving a trace and how to take care of the land. You’ll study wildlife up close and learn about nature all around you. There are plenty of skills for you to master, and you can teach others what you have learned. Everyone helping everyone else-that’s part of Scouting, too.
SCOUTING promises you friendship. Members of the troop you join might be boys you already know, and you will meet many other Scouts along the way. Some could become lifelong friends.
SCOUTING promises you opportunities to work toward the Eagle Scout rank. You will set positive goals for yourself and then follow clear routes to achieve them.
SCOUTING promises you tools to help you make the most of your family, your community, and your nation. The good deeds you perform every day will improve the lives of those around you. You will be prepared to help others in time of need.
SCOUTING promises you experiences and duties that will help you mature into a strong, wise adult. The Scout Oath and the Scout Law can guide you while you are a Scout and throughout your life.
Adventure, learning, challenge, responsibility – the promise of Scouting is all this and more.

So this is the Promise of Scouting that I refer to when you hear me talk or write about it.
Now, why is this important today?  Well I have been talking about the Journey to Excellence lately and how it will be a great tool in our programs.  When I look at the Promise of Scouting and hold it up against the JTE criteria.  Well folks.. there it is.  It’s not about percentages or working numbers.  It’s about measuring the delivery of the Promise.
And as Forrest Gump would say.. “That’s all I got to say about that”.
Have a Great Scouting Day!
