You know, some times things happen and then you look back at it and have an “Ah Ha” moment.
In my last post I put in a Rockwell print to illustrate “Scouting”… Today as I looked at it again, I thought.. Now that is the ultimate Boy Scout Recruiting poster.
Look at the Cub Scout in the print.. you know what he wants out of Scouting… Look close you will see it.

That picture is so indicative of Scouting in my household right now…Ethan and Sam in the khaki, Joey in the blue…waiting to be a Boy Scout.
On a recent Webelos Woods event, a Webelos scout asked me what he had to do to join our troop. I went through the litany. 11 years old or done with fifth grade or Arrow of light. Find a good troop, apply. Agree to live by the scout oath and law.
The kid’s face lit up. He said, ” I am 11. I don’t have to wait for the Arrow of Light.” Inwardly I groaned, since I knew his parents wanted him to finish AOL. I sent him to consult them, and they talked him in to staying with the pack and finishing. But he is so enthusiastic. And wanted to join us so bad. Just like your picture.
The Boy Scouts are out there about to do something interesting and fun. (Meetings are not fun, but they are tolerable if preparing to do something that’s going to be fun.)
This painting is the best expression of a quote I keep in mind as a 7th grade teacher. Allan’s story of the Webelo underlines this. It’s by Antione de Saint-Exupery (Author of The Little Prince):
